Overview

The Tour de France is the largest annual sporting event in the world, attracting a global audience in over 180 countries. Sheffield represented 22 miles of competitive cycling with one of the most challenging stages of the whole 2014 Tour, including the four coveted King of the Mountain climbs. Over 380,000 people lined the roads to watch to race, with over 18.6 million watching on television; 38% of the spectators were from Sheffield, 18% from Yorkshire and 44% from the rest of the UK and abroad.

The post-event survey showed that 75% of the Sheffield spectators would recommend the area to family and friends and that 60% of the visitors said they would return to the city for a short break or holiday. This represents a unique opportunity to harness the enthusiasm, profile and continuing legacy of the Tour de France in Sheffield to attract visitors to the city and raise local participation in cycling.


Our proposal is to put in place a scheme of ‘celebration markers’ to animate the Tour de France route focusing on the King of the Mountain climbs. The scheme will make permanent some of the best and most iconic street art from the event as well as marking both the start and finish lines.

Why We Are Consulting

We would like to give residents the opportunity to see and comment on the proposed street art scheme. We will be running a public consultation period from the 4th July to the 26th July 2015 where you can give your views. We are particularly interested to consult on the location of the proposed street art.

This consultation will inform the final designs and location for the scheme. The timescales we are working to are as follows:


• 4th July – start and end markers in place and launch of the Street Art Public Consultation
• 4th July to the 26th July – Street Art Public Consultation
• August to September – delivery and launch of street art
 

What Happens Next

This consultation will inform the final designs and locations of the street art. The results of the consultation will be available in early August.
