Proposal to create a Dog Training Area in High Hazels Park

Closes 17 Mar 2021

Opened 20 Jan 2021

Overview

The Yorkshire Dog Training Company is an established pet dog training brand, currently operating over 4 sites in Leeds, Wakefield, Harrogate and Doncaster.  Over the past 10 years they have worked with over two thousand pet owners to help them control their dogs safely and confidently.  Their training helps create confident, happy and well-disciplined dogs and avoid instances of rehoming and euthanasia.

This proposal plans to bring the disused bowling green, in High Hazels Park back into use as a specialist dog training facility.  Allowing views into and across the area, the existing boundary will be secured by a 1.8m metal mesh fence and gate where the existing entrance is.  The fence itself will be screened from view by existing vegetation.

The currently dis-used container storage, previously located elsewhere in the park, will be used as office space, and a small area of artificial grass will be laid, with a temporary covered area for periods of bad weather.  Customers will be allowed to access the toilets within the golf clubhouse.

Expected hours of business are Monday to Saturday: 9.00am to 5.00pm with the possibility of evening and weekend sessions as the business develops.

The project will benefit High Hazels Park and the local community in several ways:

  • The bowling green currently feels neglected and disused. An active, professional business will bring this area back into use and improve its appearance.
  • The rental income generated by the business will be retained for use directly within High Hazels Park.
  • Better controlled dogs and more responsible dog walkers means cleaner and safer parks and greenspaces for all to enjoy.
  • Customers can safely venture into public spaces with their dogs, knowing that they are under control and no risk to other members of the public.
  • This service will provide customers the opportunity to exercise outside in green space while learning to control their dogs.  Activities like these are proven to be beneficial to people’s physical, mental and emotional health.
  • The company arranges group social meetings for previous customers. This has been hugely helpful to some elderly and lonely people and given them a boost in self-esteem.
