Sheffield Smokefree Playgrounds Consultation

Overview

Sheffield City Council are committed to reducing smoking prevalence in the city. As part of this commitment we are proposing to make all Sheffield Playgrounds Smokefree.

What is a Smokefree playground?

A Smokefree playground is an outdoor space where no-one smokes or uses an e-cigarette in the playground area.

Why Smokefree playgrounds?

Evidence tells us that children are less likely to start smoking if they do not view the activity as a normal part of everyday life.  Three out of four children are aware of cigarettes before they reach the age of five, irrespective of whether or not the parents smoke.

The aim of Smokefree Playgrounds is:

• To reduce the number of children and young people who start smoking
• To decrease cigarette litter and make playgrounds nice places to be
• To reduce children and young people’s exposure to smoking and second hand smoke

Why your views matter

The purpose of this consultation is to canvas local views, opinions and potential support for Smokefree playgrounds in Sheffield. Please tell us what you think. Do you support Smokefree playgrounds?

Please note; the Smokefree playground approach is a voluntary code, there would be no enforcement action.

The consultation will commence from the 18 July 2015 until the 4th September 2015.

You can take part in the Smokefree Playgrounds Consultation by completing the online survey or dropping in at the following parks to complete a questionnaire face to face with one of our advisors. The following sessions are available:

• Parson Cross Park - Every Monday, 12.00noon – 4.00pm
• High Hazels Park - Every Tuesday, 2.00pm – 6.00pm
• Hillsborough Park - Every Wednesday, 2.00pm – 6.00pm
• Greenhill Park – Every Thursday, 12.00noon – 4.00pm
• Norfolk Park – Every Wednesday, 12.00noon – 4.00pm & Every Friday, 10.00am – 2.00pm (Excluding Friday 28^th August)
• Concord Park – Every Monday, 1.00pm – 5.00pm & Every Saturday, 12.00noon – 4.00pm
• Firth Park – Every Monday, 6.00pm – 7.30pm
• Richmond Park – Mondays 20 July & 27 July, 2.00pm – 3.30pm
• Manor Fields – Every Wednesday, 4.30pm – 6.00pm
• Arbourthorne Recreation Ground – Every Thursday, 3.00pm – 4.30pm
• Busk Meadows Park – Fridays, 6.00pm – 7.30pm
• Ponderosa Park – Fridays, 3.00pm – 4.30pm
• Tinsley Green – Saturdays, 4.30pm – 6.00pm
